Topic: Condensing Boilers - Equipment Selection, Optimizing Boiler Efficiency, Understanding Physical Limitations

Condensing Boiler selection is not as simple as it sounds, with over thirty companies providing some type of condensing boiler it is important to understand the differences in design and performance. We will cover the different types of condensing boilers and examine the pros and cons of various designs. We will explain the truths about efficiency and how simply selecting a high-efficiency boiler may not equate to performance improvements. We will look at all around system performance and how to achieve higher total system efficiency through the use of modern control technology and equipment selection, resulting in lower upfront cost with no compromise on efficiency, resulting in faster payback on investment.

Doug has extensive market experience with specific emphasis on high-efficiency condensing boiler equipment having previously worked as an independent manufacturer's representative as well as a factory-direct sales manager and business development manager for other industry manufacturers including Patterson-Kelley and De Dietrich.

Topic: Creating a World of Zero Energy Buildings

With the advancement of energy efficiency and the rapid decrease in cost of solar electric systems, the concept of creating a building that produces as much energy as it consumes is becoming a reality.  This presentation will look at how to achieve a zero energy building, the process for achieving success, and some of the technologies that are used to achieve this goal.

Speaker: Paul Torcellini Associate Professor of Sustainable Energy Studies at Eastern Connecticut State University

Paul Torcellini is an Associate Professor of Sustainable Energy Studies at Eastern Connecticut State University and a Principal Engineer for Commercial Buildings Research at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), a DOE national laboratory.  Paul has authored or co-authored more than 50 papers and articles related to energy efficiency and zero-energy commercial buildings. Among his many awards, Paul has received two ASHRAE Technology Awards for his energy-efficient buildings work and two Energy User News magazine's Efficient Building Awards. Paul was key in creating the performance based procurement process used to achieve zero energy building status for NREL's Research Support Facility and has been key in the development of the Advanced Energy Design Guide series from ASHRAE. Paul is a registered Professional Engineer holding a PhD from Purdue University.

Topic: Calibrate Your Tissue Box: A Practical Guide to ASHRAE Standard 170 Compliance

Over the last few years, air pressure relationships within healthcare facilities have been receiving increased attention. When it comes to regulatory surveys, air pressure has become a top-cited violation.
But it's not just for passing tissue tests that healthcare facility staff and design professionals need to be familiar with ASHRAE Standard 170. When renovating patient rooms, repurposing existing spaces, or building new hospitals, they need to be prepared for the impact of today's codes and standards on their project's design and budget.
In this presentation, Katie will give participants a practical understanding of how ASHRAE 170 impacts healthcare facility operation and design. Diagrams and illustrations will show how ASHRAE 170 requirements actually take shape in a healthcare facility. Topics will include air pressure relationships, building systems, equipment location, and room functions, with special attention given to spaces where pressure requirements are particularly critical.

Speaker: Katie Lee, PE senior mechanical project engineer at Karpinski Engineering

Katie focuses on healthcare renovation projects, where she excels at designing new functions into existing spaces. With her experience designing systems for legacy buildings, Katie knows how to navigate the code, coordination, and existing condition challenges that arise along the way. Katie recently presented on ASHRAE 170 at the 2016 ASHE Annual Conference & Technical Exhibition. She earned her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio Northern University and has been part of the Karpinski Engineering team for 10 years. She is a member of ASHRAE, ASHE and NOSHE.

ASHRAE Columbus September Event

Topic: The Impact of the Ohio Board of Building Standards adopting ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010.

The Ohio Board of Building Standards (OBBS) is currently in the process of upgrading the commercial building energy code from ASHRAE Std. 90.1-2007 to Std. 90.1-2010 with a projected effective date of Jan. 1, 2017. ASHRAE developed Std. 90.1-2010 with a targeted 30% energy savings relative to Std. 90.1-2004. In order to achieve this level of energy savings 109 addenda that were approved and incorporated into the standard that affect the mandatory and prescriptive requirements in Chapters 5 through 10. Energy savings are achieved with 60% of the addenda while the remaining have no energy impact since they deal with editorial issues: updates to references, improves clarification, fix known errata, reorganize tables, etc.  The presentation will review the major changes in each of the key sections of the standard and explain the analysis procedure used to determine whether the 30% savings were achieved. In addition to the changes incorporated by ASHRAE the OBBS further modified the standard with changes in computer rooms/data centers and roofing projects and deleted sections dealing with circulating pump controls and automatic receptacle control. This overview will summarize the impact that Std. 90.1-2010 will require for all new commercial building designs.

Speaker: Merle F. McBride, Ph.D., P.E., Research Fellow with Owens Corning Center of Science and Technology

Merle F. McBride has been at the Owens Corning Center of Science and Technology in Granville, Ohio for 40 years. He received his degrees in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University and is a registered professional engineer in Ohio. His technical focus has been on the energy performance of residential and commercial buildings which he has used in the development of U.S. energy codes and standards. Dr. McBride has been an active member in ASHRAE at the national level since 1976, has served on several Technical Committees, was a contributing author to handbook chapters and served ten years on the Standards Committee. His current committee appointments include: Standards 90.1, 90.2 and 189.1. He has been on all eleven of the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide committees. Dr. McBride has over 100 publications, was awarded two U.S. patents, and received multiple awards from ASHRAE and industry.
